Work in Development

Our Development Process

We seek to form meaningful relationships with artists, support the development of their work, and move their projects towards production.

We are particularly interested in incubating new pieces that center artists whose stories have not often been championed in the American theatre, including BIPOC artists, disabled artists, LGBTQIA+ artists, women artists, immigrant artists, and more. We are interested in pieces that push form and feature innovative dramaturgy (as well as dramaturgies that fall outside of the “Western” canon). We are also eager to support projects that originate with artists other than playwrights, such as designers, directors, choreographers, dramaturgs, and more.

Our offerings are flexible, as we are committed to tailoring the process to suit the needs of each artist. We strive to be nimbly responsive to our artists’ goals.

Past World Premieres

Known for its historic commitment to development of new work, Long Wharf Theatre has produced dozens of world premieres and many of our productions that began in New Haven transferred to Broadway, Off-Broadway, and theatres around the country.

We premiered A.R. Gurney's Love Letters, John Henry Redwood's The Old Settler, and Athol Fugard's Coming Home.
