SHAKESPEARE WITH GLEE: CALLING ALL KIDS FOR A PART IN ‘TAMING OF THE SHREW’ AT LWT
By Sandi Kahn Shelton, Register Staff
New Haven–If you’re interested in acting, and you’re between 14 and 19, hie thee to the Long Wharf Theatre this week, where Annie DiMartino is running auditions for “The Taming of the Shrew,” as part of a new Shake-It-Up Shakespeare for teens.
Rest assured, this is not your mother’s Shakespeare. Think a musical theater kind of Shakespeare, with electric guitars and a soundtrack. Think rock.
For this production, DiMartino, a Shakespeare lover, has kept the original language of the bard, but twisted the characters so that Kate, the shrew, is now a hard-rocking, edgy Ani DiFranco-type. Bianca is a sweet pop musician, like Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift. And Baptista, Bianca’s manager, says that the only way he’ll allow Bianca to sign a record deal is if the producer takes the rough, tough Kate as well. Then in comes Petruchio, a down-on-his-luck record executive who, in his glory days, managed the greats and now must settle for teaching Kate the ways of the music world.
