Long Wharf Theatre has a long history of launch the careers of young artists through its Next Stage program, the theatre’s early career development program. The Next Stage program is dedicated to engaging and employing a new generation of diverse theatre artists, administrators and leaders. The Next Stage Program is divided into two groups: Residents and Interns. Both groups work among professionals to learn from hands-on experience.
The Stage Management Resident will be involved in as many of our 6 productions next season as possible, schedule permitting. They will assist both resident and in-coming stage management staff with a wide variety of office work, show work, and visiting artist hospitality, which includes transportation in company vehicles. Candidates should posses a clean driving record, and, more importantly, a willingness to work long days, six days a week, in both rehearsal and performance settings, with stamina and good humor. Though the schedule is demanding, this residency will allow you to work with as many as 100 visiting actors, directors, and designers from all over the country.
Each resident will assist directors during rehearsals of two to three productions as well as take part in the day-to-day activities of a busy artistic/literary office, casting, and play readings on- and off-site. Literary and dramaturgical duties include: creating actor packets, audience guides, and program notes; soliciting and evaluating scripts; database maintenance; and lobby exhibits. As part of Long Wharf's audience engagement initiative, residents will also assist with and facilitate post-play discussions. The ideal candidate will have a degree in theatre or equivalent experience; demonstrate skill in oral and written communication, analysis, and research; and thrive in an unpredictable, fast-paced, and collaborative work environment.
The Education Resident participates in the development, implementation and analysis of all educational programming which include: pre-show workshops and post-show talk-backs surrounding our student matinee series, teacher workshops, the creation of study guides and video study guides, opportunities to team-teach through the Long Wharf Theatre Studio, area school residencies, Educators' Laboratory Teacher Training Program, and special conferences. The ideal candidate will have a degree in theatre or equivalent experience; demonstrate skill in oral and written communication, analysis, and research; and thrive in an unpredictable, fast-paced, and collaborative work environment.
This resident will gain experience working with the Company Manager to create an environment where actors and artists can work to their potential, specifically in the area of housing and travel. The resident will learn how to think on their feet with an organic schedule and will be involved in such responsibilities as driving the actors to and from rehearsal and performance, inventory and upkeep of apartments according to Equity standards, and driving actors to medical appointments if the need arises. As the front line and the first staff the actors meet, a positive attitude and a sense of humor are important and a must for company managers. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license.
This resident will work primarily with the Master Electrician in hanging and focusing, creation of special effects, assisting in the run of the show, board operation and the maintenance of lighting equipment. The ideal candidate will have a degree in theatre or equivalent experience; demonstrate skill in oral communication, and be able to work on top of all ladders while holding at least 25 lbs.
This resident will gain experience with the Audio Supervisor in areas of sound design, sound engineering, playback systems, equipment maintenance, sound editing, and will gain board operation experience. The ideal candidate will have a degree in theatre or equivalent experience, demonstrate skill in oral communication, be able to climb ladders, including trestle style.
The Costume Resident Program takes a "whole costumer" approach. While working with many of the nation's best designers, the Resident will learn a wide range of techniques and styles, improve stitching skills, work craft projects, research, fittings and attend technical rehearsals. The resident will be on the wardrobe crew for at least one show. The ideal candidate will have a degree in theatre or equivalent experience and demonstrate skill in oral communication.
The Resident will work alongside professional carpenters on the build, load in and strike of each production. The Resident must have basic scenic carpentry skills and be comfortable using basic tools. Metal working skills are a plus, but not required and training can be part of the residency. This resident will work alongside the staff Technical Director to be the Technical Director for the Next Stage Production. Computer drafting skills are a plus, but not required, Auto Cad preferred, but may also use Vector Works. This residency can be crafted to suit the individual including working with our staff Charge Scenic Artist. The ideal candidate will have a degree in theatre or equivalent experience, demonstrate skill in oral communication, be able to lift at least 75 lbs, and have a clean valid driver's license.
The Props Resident will work hands-on with the properties department in the construction and acquisition of all props for each production, including rehearsal props. Candidates should have basic understanding of the safe use of all basic power and hand tools, be able to lift furniture and possess a valid driver's license, with a clean driving record. The resident will work closely with staff artisans and carpenters, as well as designers, stage managers and directors. The ideal candidate will have a degree in theatre or equivalent experience, and demonstrate skill in oral communication.
An intern is a part-time academic position that will receive either high school or college credit for their efforts. All intern positions are project-based positions. This means that an Intern will focus on a specific project, with a specific time frame, generally working part-time during the week, and for a short portion of the season. An Intern will be assigned to a specific department with which there is an appropriate need for that Intern. Please note that as housing is not provided, local applicants are preferred for internships.
