Judith Ivey comes straight from The Glass Menagerie...

The last time Judith Ivey appeared on Long Wharf's stage, it was in her groundbreaking performance as Amanda Wingfield in the play that made Tennessee Williams famous.  That production went on to play off-Broadway at the Roundabout, where it won three Lucille Lortel awards, including for best actress (Judith Ivey) and best director (Gordon Edelstein).

From there, the production moved to the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, where it was the largest grossing production in over ten years.  That production closed October 17, 2010, and Ms. Ivey was back at Long Wharf, in rehearsal, on November 2!

"...in a production directed by Gordon Edelstein that’s lightning-lit from within by the tough, compelling and first-rate Amanda Wingfield ofJudith Ivey, giving what is surely the performance of her career."

Charles Isherwood, New York Times

"Ms. Ivey...imbues the role with a perfectly judged mixture of chiffon and steel."

Charles Isherwood, New York Times

"Amanda Wingfield is one of the greatest roles in American drama, but this scene-stealer from “The Glass Menagerie” isn’t as easy to get right as some might assume.  All credit then to Judith Ivey, who magnificently incarnates this mother making a last-ditch effort to get her grown children onto a path of respectability and security after a long and embarrassing detour of family hardship. It’s a performance that I’ll set down with Vanessa Redgrave’s in “Orpheus Descending” as high-water marks in my Tennessee Williams theatergoing."

Charles McNulty, LA Times
