| LONG WHARF THEATRE 2006 - 2007 SEASON |
|
DURANGO From the award-winning playwright who brought you BFE, comes a compelling new drama. A reluctant road trip to Durango, Colorado, becomes a journey of self-discovery. Each passing mile unearths the fears, fantasies, and failures of an Asian-American family determined to succeed. Transferring to New York's Public Theater, Durango is new American drama at its best. ROCKET TO THE MOON Young Cleo Singer awakened love in the heart of her middle-aged boss that he thought was lost long ago. Swept up in her own romantic yearning, Cleo suddenly finds herself in a love triangle between her married boss and his elderly father-in-law. Considered by many to be Clifford Odets' best play, Rocket to the Moon is a wonderfully poignant love story filled with lost dreams, rekindled love, and unerring hope. A play for the romantic in all of us. THE SANTALAND DIARIES Tired of the same old Christmas Carol? Save yourself from another year of nutcrackers by taking an exclusive trip to David Sedaris' Santaland! Follow "Crumpet," a 33-year-old starving artist turned Macy's Santaland elf, as he struggles to maintain his sanity amidst the absurdity of the Christmas season at the world's biggest department store. From eccentric Santas to maniacal moms, hilarity abounds in this irreverent tale of America's fascination with all things Claus. The perfect spike in your holiday punch! THE COCKTAIL HOUR When John returns home with his latest play based on the lives of his family, the martinis begin to flow, his mother gets sauced, his sister breaks down, and the roast burns to a crisp. The civilized cocktail hour quickly whirls into a lively family feud with director Kim Rubinstein (Guys and Dolls and Private Lives) at the helm. Gurney captures the grace and poise of upper-class America, and the turmoil bubbling just underneath. A shot of laughter and a splash of family drama mix flawlessly in a satiric look at the suburban American family. MAN OF LA MANCHA In the tradition of Guys and Dolls comes a fresh interpretation of the five-time Tony Award-winning musical Man of La Mancha. Delight in the re-telling of the tale of Don Quixote, the idealistic knight who valiantly battled windmill giants. Join him and his sidekick Sancho Panza on their quest for hope and honor in difficult times, as this epic story unfolds in Long Wharf Theatre's intimate space. A musical masterpiece revived. A production as yet untitled Two of America's strongest playwrights, Obie Award-winners David Cale (Floyd and Clea under the Western Sky) and Dael Orlandersmith (Yellowman), come together for the first time in this extraordinary collaboration. This beautiful and comic evening of storytelling is a once-in-a-lifetime theatrical experience. UNCLE VANYA A rich and sensual adaptation of the Russian masterpiece, Chekhov is delivered through the eyes of Long Wharf Theatre's Artistic Director, Gordon Edelstein. This is the classic story of a family estate brought to the brink of ruin at the arrival of an ailing professor and his exquisitely beautiful wife. Considered both existential and naturalistic drama, Uncle Vanya is a captivating exploration of the human condition. SPECIAL EVENTS BLACK NATIVITY The nativity story and a church revival combined, Black Nativity uses rousing Gospel music and the poetry of celebrated African-American writer Langston Hughes to tell the story of the birth of Jesus.
