TRAVEL & LEARN ABOUT THE CIVIL WAR IN CT

Visit the Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven at 1 p.m. on Saturdays for a free historic walking tour of those buried in this cemetery, including several Civil War veterans. Click for details of the walking tour.

The New England Civil War Museum is located at 14 Park Place in Vernon, CT, in Vernon’s Town Hall. Open Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. and the second and fourth Sunday of the month from 12 to 3 p.m. For information, call (860) 870-3563 or visit the museum web site.

The General Mansfield House is located at 151 Main St. Middletown, CT. Built in 1810, the Federal-style home contains exhibits including decorative arts and Civil War artifacts. For information, call (860) 346-0746.

The Amistad Trail. Locations throughout Connecticut. In 1839, a group of Africans who were to be sold into slavery took control of the ship Amistad, which then landed in Connecticut. Several trials were held to determine the status of the Africans, who wanted to return to their homeland. Eventually, the Supreme Court ruled that all people exist in a natural state of freedom, and therefore, the Amistad Africans were free. The Connecticut Freedom Trail. Sites includes over 60 historic locations throughout the state. Each location played an important role in the African-American journey from slavery to freedom in Connecticut. Places in addition to those listed on the Amistad Trail include historic homes, churches, graves, monuments, and sites on the Underground Railroad.
