Long Wharf Theatre encourages a diverse body of applicants, female and male, of all ethnic heritages, of all religious background.

 

Next Stage is our Early Career Development Program, which is dedicated to engaging and employing a new generation of diverse theatre artists, administrators and leaders. The Next Stage Program is divided into two groups: Residents and Interns.

Both groups will work among professionals to learn from hands-on experience and be exposed to the many elements that make a professional theater work.

Besides the individual experience for each Resident and Intern position, Next Stage will offer seminars and networking opportunities, as well as the chance to produce a theatrical event highlighting the skills and talents of the Next Stage Program participants.

NEXT STAGE RESIDENT PROGRAM:
2008-2009 SEASON

A Resident is an early career professional working in a specific field gaining hands-on experience and engaging professionals on a daily basis. A Resident is a seasonal full-time position, 2008-2009 dates to be announced.

The Residents participate in and run Next Stage Productions, and present a theatrical event to the public as a showcase of their talents.

Residents are selected by application and interview. Applications received before April 15 will be given first consideration, however we will continue to accept applications until all positions are filled.

2008-2009

Costumes – This Resident Program takes a “whole costumer” approach. While working with many of the nation’s best designers, the Resident will learn a wide range of techniques and styles, improve stitching skills, work craft projects, research, fittings and attend technical rehearsals. The Resident will be on the wardrobe crew for at least one show.

Artistic Residents (2 positions) - Residents will take part in daily administrative activities which include: weekly artistic and season planning meetings; casting; coordination and coverage of readings both on- and off-site; and participation in the general daily life of the artistic staff. Each resident will assist directors during rehearsals of two to three productions (to be assigned at the discretion of the associate artistic director). Literary and dramaturgical duties include: research, writing, editing, and layout of actor packets, audience guides, and program notes; script reading and evaluation; database maintenance; lobby exhibit curation and execution; and playwright correspondence. As part of Long Wharf's audience engagement initiative, residents will assist with audience enhancement activities and facilitate post-play discussions.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in theatre or equivalent experience; demonstrate skill in oral and written communication, analysis, and research; and thrive in an unpredictable, fast-paced, and collaborative work environment.

Education - The Education Resident participates in the development and implementation of all educational programming which include: events and talk-backs surrounding our student matinee series, teacher workshops, the creation of study guides and video study guides, opportunities to team-teach through the Long Wharf Theatre Studio, area school residencies, Educator’s Laboratory Teaching Training Program, and special conferences.

Lighting – This Resident will work primarily with the Master Electrician in hanging and focusing, creation of special effects, assisting in the run of the show, board operation and the maintenance of lighting equipment.

Production – This Resident will primarily cross-over between Production Management, Stage Management and Company Management. Duties and responsibilities will include some office work, transportation, daily rehearsal as necessary, run crew and show support.  The resident may also be asked to swing into other technical departments if their assistance is required.

Props – The Prop Resident will work hands-on with the properties department in the construction and acquisition of all props for each production, including rehearsal props. Candidates should have a basic understanding of the safe use of all basic power and hand tools, be able to lift furniture, and possess a valid driver’s license, with a clean driving record.   The Resident will work closely with staff artisans and carpenters, as well as designers, stage managers and directors.

Scenery – This Resident will work along side professional carpenters on the build, load in and strike of each production .  The resident must have basic scenic carpentry skills and be comfortable using basic tools.  Metal working skills are a plus, but not required and training can be part of the residency.  This resident will work along side the Technical Supervisor to be the Technical Director for the Next Stage Production. Computer drafting skills are a plus, Auto Cad preferred, but may also use Vector Works.  This residency can be crafted to suit the individual. 

Sound – This Resident will gain experience with the Sound Supervisor, in areas of sound design, sound engineering, playback systems, equipment maintenance, sound editing, and will gain board operation experience on all Stage II shows.

Stage Management -This resident will work with the Stage Management teams on both Main Stage and Stage II productions.  The Stage Management resident will assist in preproduction set up, daily rehearsal activities, and will act as run crew during performances as needed.  They will also work with the Production Assistants and Company Management in order to assist with daily guest artist travel.  There will also be  opportunities to work on projects with various workshops and rentals outside of the main subscription series.

NEXT STAGE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

An Intern is a part-time academic position that will receive either high school or college credit for their efforts.

All Intern positions are project-based positions. This means that an Intern will focus on a specific project, with a specific time frame, generally working part-time during the week, and for a short portion of the season.

An Intern will be assigned to a specific department with which there is an appropriate need for that Intern.
