LONG WHARF THEATRE WILL HOLD FIRST ANNUAL RADIO AUCTION ON MAY 18

NEW HAVEN - Long Wharf Theatre moves from the stage to the air waves for four hours in May, holding its First Annual Radio Auction.

The event will take place on Sunday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, followed by an online auction from 2 p.m. onwards. This brand new event on 960 WELI-AM, hosted by local radio personality John Harper, will broadcast live from Long Wharf Theatre and feature interviews with celebrities, community leaders and live performances.

Brian Dennehy, the star of Long Wharf Theatre's season opening production of Hughie by Eugene O'Neill and Krapp's Last Tape by Samuel Beckett, will be one of many performers interviewed at the auction.

Actors Jane Alexander (a Tony Award-winner and former director of the National Endowment for the Arts), Tom Hulce (Academy Award-nominee for his role in Amadeus and a Tony Award-winner) will also be interviewed on the program.

Interspersed with the programming, Long Wharf Theatre will conduct an auction of items including one-of-a-kind experiences, such as a walk-on role in a Mainstage production, dinners at favorite restaurants, plane tickets, weekend getaways, and great items from local merchants, showcasing the rich diversity of businesses in Greater New Haven.

"This event highlights the wonderful partnerships that exist between Long Wharf Theatre and the vibrant local business community," said Deeksha Gaur, Long Wharf Theatre's assistant managing director and coordinator of the event.

The event not only provides Long Wharf Theatre with the chance to raise needed funds for the continued success of its artistic and education programming, but also creates an opportunity to reach out to a large segment of the population who might not ordinarily be exposed to the theatre's work. The event is a chance to celebrate Long Wharf Theatre and its importance in the greater New Haven community.

"We provide a great balance of theatre that attracts and interests many different members of the Connecticut community," Gaur said. "We are a core component of New Haven's distinctive cultural scene."

Members of the Long Wharf Theatre staff - a rich artistic community in its own right - will participate in performances throughout the radio auction. From live music to a serial radio play, audiences will get a glimpse into the diverse talents of the people who create the onstage magic that Long Wharf is famous for.

"Every institution is made up by a number of players. The interests, passions and pursuits of those players are what give an institution its flavor and meaning," Gaur said.
