| Long Wharf Theatre News Release Steven Scarpa, Public Relations Manager 203-772-8224 / steven.scarpa@longwharf.org Date: Dec. 31, 2007 LONG WHARF THEATRE PARTNERS NEW HAVEN - It is said, metaphorically, that theatre artists give their life's blood to their craft. For the staff of Long Wharf Theatre, that statement goes beyond metaphor - it is, at least for one day, a reality. Long Wharf Theatre, working in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will host a blood drive at the theatre on Thursday, Jan. 24 from 12:30 to 5:15 p.m. Those interested in donating blood should plan to stay for about an hour. A Red Cross employee will have a brief discussion with potential donors to determine eligibility. "By collaborating on this blood drive, Long Wharf Theatre and the American Red Cross are active partners in contributing to the health of our community," said Managing Director Joan Channick. Samantha Nelson, the Master Carpenter at the theatre, had wanted to take some time to give blood, but her schedule didn't permit it. She had been considering the idea of coordinating a blood drive at the theatre when preparation for Let Me Down Easy, a new play by Anna Deavere Smith, began. The play's theme is the resiliency of the human body. With that in mind, and keeping in mind the theatre's continued efforts to be a vibrant, active participant in all aspects of the New Haven community, Nelson decided to move forward. "This is a good fit for everyone," she said. Nelson, a Wallingford resident, approached Long Wharf Theatre's administration, who were in full support of her efforts. "All of us are potentially vulnerable, and we count on the Red Cross to be there for us when we need them. I can't think of a more meaningful way for our audience, staff, and board to act on the sense of common humanity this play provokes, or to honor the people portrayed in this play, than to donate blood," Channick said. All blood donors receive a voucher for a half-priced ticket to any performance of Let Me Down Easy. If one has already purchased tickets and opts to donate blood, they will receive a companion ticket for their performance as a thank you from Long Wharf Theatre. To make an appointment to give blood, please call Long Wharf Theatre between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 203-787-4282 by Jan. 17. Walk-ins on the day of the event are welcome. # # # LONG WHARF THEATRE, founded in 1965, is recognized as a leader in American theater, producing fresh and imaginative revivals of classics and modern plays, rediscoveries of neglected works and a variety of world and American premieres. More than 30 Long Wharf productions have transferred virtually intact to Broadway or off-Broadway, including the 2005 production of BFE by Julia Cho, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning plays Wit by Margaret Edson, The Shadow Box by Michael Cristofer, and The Gin Game by D.L. Coburn. Long Wharf has received New York Drama Critics Awards, Obie Awards, the Margo Jefferson Award for Production of New Works, a Special Citation from the Outer Critics Circle, and the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. ~ End of Release ~ Steven Scarpa Close window Long Wharf News Home
