LONG WHARF THEATRE LEGACY CIRCLE
OUR MISSION: To create theatre of the highest quality that inspires discourse and reflection about each of us and the world in which we live.
YOUR ROLE IN OUR MISSION: To ensure that Long Wharf Theatre can continue to create this inspiration for many generations to come.
The Long Wharf Theatre Legacy Circle was created to thank those who have included the theatre in their long-term philanthropic plans—through bequests, retirement plan designations, life income gifts and other deferred gifts—and to inspire others to join in their ranks.
Legacy Circle members will be thanked annually for their visionary philanthropy, invited to special events, and included on our public roster of members. (Of course, we also respect and value all requests to remain anonymous about your gift.)
Through our planned giving partnership with The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven we are able to tend to all of your philanthropic needs, so there is no gift too complicated, nor asset too cumbersome. Please contact us with questions about any type of gift.
Bequests for Long Wharf Theatre: Leaving a bequest of any amount to Long Wharf Theatre makes a notable difference to our future sustainability and growth; it is also the most flexible of gifts, as it allows you to tend to your needs and those of your loved ones first.
There are several ways to include Long Wharf Theatre in your plans – and each may qualify for an estate tax deduction. You can design your bequest to give all or a percentage of your estate to Long Wharf Theatre, a specific dollar amount, or a particular asset; you may also name Long Wharf Theatre as a residuary or contingent beneficiary of your estate.
Below is sample language you may share with you attorney, who can assist you in creating your legacy gift:
I, (name), of (City, State, Zip) give, devise and bequeath the sum of $_______; or (a specific asset, such as securities or other assets); or _____ percent of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, to Connecticut Players Foundation dba Long Wharf Theatre, in New Haven, Connecticut, for its general purposes.”
If you would like to designate your bequest for a specific purpose, or create a named endowed fund, please contact the Development Department to discuss your plans, so that we may assist you with appropriate language.
Gifts of Life Insurance
If you own a life insurance policy and no longer need its protection, you can give that policy to Long Wharf – making Long Wharf Theatre the owner and the irrevocable beneficiary of the policy. By doing this you may be entitled to an income tax deduction for the gift.
Retirement Plan Designations: You may designate Long Wharf Theatre as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other qualified retirement plan. In order to accomplish this, you will need to contact your retirement plan administrator to request the necessary forms. In general, the process for doing this is a simple one, and there can be significant tax savings, but as with any charitable gift, you should consult your professional advisors to be sure such a gift fits in well with your overall plans.
Gifts that pay you income - Life Income Gifts: Through our partnership with The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Long Wharf supporters may establish a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust. Such gifts will pay you and/or a loved one income for life or a term of years, and then ultimately benefit Long Wharf in perpetuity through the establishment of a named endowment fund. The Community Foundation serves as the fiduciary and the administrator of your gift. We encourage you to request a confidential, sample illustration about how a life income gift could work in your specific circumstances.

And That’s Not All: There are many other ways to carry out your philanthropy, both long- and short-term, and we would value the opportunity to explore them with you in a strictly confidential manner.
