CELEBRITIES CRITICIZED FOR THEIR BODY IMAGE
THE BODY REVOLUTION
ARGUMENT
Lady Gaga: Combating photoshopped pictures of her from an Amsterdam concert, Lady Gaga posted scandalous photos of herself and barely anything else on her social networking site Little Monsters and called her fans to do the same in support of a “Body Revolution.” After admitting to suffering from “bulimia and anorexia since I was 15,” Gaga encouraged others to share their stories and “be brave and post a photo of you that celebrates your triumph over insecurities.” The ultimate goal is to “to inspire bravery…to make our flaws famous, and thus redefine the heinous.” Fans have been enthusiastically responding, including a woman with stage 2 breast cancer and one woman who had “always been embarrass[ed]…to show how overweight [she] was.”
COUNTERARGUMENT
Adele: In a recent article in the Huffington Post discussed Adele’s opposition to showing skin to sell records. The 24-year old singer believes that musicians stripping down to almost nothing are selling a “false image” to their fans. Adele continued to say “Exploiting yourself sexually is not a good look. I don’t find it encouraging.” An eight-time Grammy award winner, Adele has been under media scrutiny in the past because of her weight, but she insists, “I just stand there and sing. I’m not worried that I’m a ‘plus size’ and so much bigger than other artists… No matter what you look like the key is to be happy with yourself.” In 2011, Adele laid out her philosophy to Vogue: “I’ve seen people where it rules their lives, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them. And I don’t want that in my life. I have insecurities, of course, but I don’t hang out with anyone who points them out to me.”
