Co Chair: John Krystal, Chair, Department of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine In addition to a wide range of scientific presentations and panels, keynote speakers included Paul Greengard, the Nobel Laureate from Rockefeller University, and Edward Scolnick, of the Staley Center at the Broad Institute, and former President of Merck Research Laboratories, and participation by video of Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institutes of Medical Health. The conference included a wide range of artistic elements, including scenes from JULY 7, 1994, by Donald Margulies; ANGELS IN AMERICA, by Tony Kushner, and PROOF, by David Auburn. In addition, William Boughton, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the New Haven Symphony, gave a fascinating lecture on composers suffering from mental illness, along with musical examples. An emotional highlight was a conversation with Rose Styron and Patrick Kennedy on William Styron’s struggle with depression, including a reading from his searing memoir, “Darkness Visible.” A specially commissioned film bringing to life global and local issues of mental illness from the Swedish filmmaker Staffan Hildebrand was shown at the event as well.
