How does a new play come to life?

Aditi Brennan Kapil, the writer of Agnes Under the Big Top, a new work slated for Stage II in March, is currently workshopping the play at Mixed Blood Theatre in Minneapolis and Arena Stage in Washington D.C. She has been writing a fascinating blog about the experience of creating a new piece of theatre. Mixed Blood will debut the show shortly before a seperate production takes place at Long Wharf; Aditi is working closely with both shows. She writes:

“I wonder if the simultaneous productions are an opportunity to share research and ideas across two productions? Or if that would be confusing and messy? Maybe there’s a selective way to have an open conversation, without it bleeding over into pre-pro or specific design choices… could be fascinating. I feel like that’s an insight that I get, going back and forth between the two productions, but might be fun for both teams of artists…”

Aditi’s blog is a marvelous insight into the new play process. Check out the full entry here: http://npdp.arenastage.org/2010/10/agnes-under-the-big-top-simultaneous-newplay-premieres-opening-up-creative-potential.html
