The Playwright

"... above all else my fear that my immigrant mother, who died at 55 of cancer, died disappointed in herself or her life. We make sense of our lives and the world around us by telling stories, real or made up. For my mother, I wanted to tell a story that stretches out reality a bit, illuminating the immigrant tale as something greater than its parts, as something beautiful and powerful. The immigrant stories in this play reflect different forms of loneliness and disappointment and failure, and how the mind learns to live with or surmount these things. And they all revolve around Agnes, who has to find a way to tell her own story now that she’s at the end of her life. She needs to, or I need her to, stretch it out into something taller, better. I need to believe that my mother went out proud. I am, as always, in awe of the leap she and my father took when they emigrated. That courage and faith, to leap into the unknown, that’s what makes the world go round."
